german fashion with a latex edge

i just pop'd over to mahret's excellent fartguide blog and found a new entry on german fashion designers which featured a bit of latex as detailing. she commented:

Germany is slow - we already knew that. And it's absolutely unfashionable - with some exceptions. We don't have proper fashion blogs and no cathy horyn, suzy menkes or whoever... just a bunch of more or less boring magazines (some exceptions here aswell) and... anyway. I was surprised to find an interview of Marios Schwab in the current issue of the Spiegel's (major German news magazine) supplement Kulturspiegel. Unfortunately it's - surprise - in German, but I simply had to post it...

go to her blog to see more of the fashion scans from teh feature and the rest of her comments.

Interesting to think of Germany as "slow" fashion-wise. When it come to fetish fashion, Germany is home to some of the greatest designers in the world, such as Marquis.

Fetish fashion is hardly fashion when you think about it. Much of it was making sexy colorful clothes in latex, mostly with the same silhouette, not exceptionally creative. But that is changing now with some serious design work done, though it still seems to be mostly in the body hugging vein. I suspect it is a technology related issue; not as large of range of materials patterns, weeves and stitching etc. as you have with cloth.

I disagree Sandero. There are plenty of fashion designers who are creating beautiful, interesting and fashionable garments out of latex. Some of these hug the body (which I wasn't aware disqualified a garment from being fashionable) while others billow and fold like garments of other more traditional materials.

Andre,

If you mean just making clothes is fashion, then yea, you're right, fetish fashion designers are doing fashion. I don't see a lot of creativity or new silhouettes etc., but lots of shiny sexy styles. Just is.
