Fetish and BDSM are the new leather jeans that pop stars now style themselves with.
I don't follow pop music but I recall how years back all the rockers wore leather pants. It was de rigeur.
So fast forward and the rebel / outsider / shock look is the BDSM fetish thing. Most pop stars have gone there. And I suspect it is attracting more people to the genre and getting them to buy and try.
Is that a good, bad or neutral thing?
For the voyeurs it's great, because they get to see more people perving. I don't think for those who are not getting terribly excited from seeing images of fetish it matters.
When it becomes so common and associated with people who adapt it to sell themselves, it also gets a tacky inauthentic feel to it as well. It does lose a bit of the shock value when it is done over and over again. And shock was why it is being used. Ain't it?

I think you should do what you want and shop for whatever you like. I am not trying to dissuade you or anyone else from wearing or enjoying fetish.
I am only commenting on how I see it portrayed in the media and used by celebs.
You have to admit that things are changing re fetish and BDSM in the public's view. Or perhaps you don't remember how it was in the 80s or earlier.
I got the album and after listening to the lyrics, I'm convinced Janet not only is a fetishist she probably has an account on Second Life.
She's definitely a submissive and has admitted as much in previous interviews. That magazine cover is gorgeous!
As with Madonna Janet jackson look sgood for her age. Right clothes and enough money does that.
